Lantern Workshops

Lantern workshops are held in the lead up to the main Carnival event. This is a great way for the public to get involved in helping make the event happen. They will be held on the four weekends leading up to the Carnival date.

What if I miss out on the workshops?

Go on the waiting list in case some people drop out. Email

Would you like to carry a giant lantern instead? Or help out in another role on Carnival night? We need over 100 volunteers to make this event work and would greatly appreciate your assistance. Check out the different roles on our volunteer page for more details or head straight to the volunteer sign up form.

About the workshops

Almost anyone over the age of seven can make a lantern and it is a great family activity. All materials are provided and trained instructors are on hand. It takes roughly two hours to make a lantern and everyone who makes a lantern becomes part of the procession on Carnival night.

All children under the age of 12 years must be accompanied by an adult. Please be aware that young children need a lot of parental help.

Each lantern made at the workshops costs $10 to cover materials, venue hire and staffing. This is paid on the day (cash only).

One workshop is not like the rest

The lantern workshop on 8-9 June at the Meridian Mall has a special purpose - to decorate the Octagon with stars! All lanterns made become part of our decorations and will be kept by the Carnival. This workshop is koha entry as you do not get to keep your lantern or be in the Carnival Procession. Ideal if you want to learn how to make a lantern and help us decorate the Octagon!

Workshop Types

There are eight days of workshops. The theme of the Carnival changes each year and so do the designs of the lanterns. This year's theme is "The Never Ending Night" and highlights the creatures and beauty of Antarctica.
