Celebrate the seasons with us!

This year's 2017 event was held in Dunedin, New Zealand, on Saturday 24th June with the theme Nocturnal Nature! A huge thank you to everyone involved - our amazing Art Team, our dedicated Production Team, scores of performers, and the more than 200 volunteers. You rock!

Weather you liked it or you want to give us some constructive feedback, we would love to hear about your experience. This is a short 10 question survey that will take you 2 minutes.

Photos and a beautiful video of this year's event can be found on the Midwinter Carnival Facebook page.

A parade in the city's heart:

The Midwinter Carnival is an annual event which celebrates our local seasons. It takes place on the Saturday closest to the Winter Solstice (longest night of the year) in Dunedin's Octagon. The event starts at 5:30pm, at which time a live band, local foodstalls, a merry-go-round and other entertainment will be present. At 6pm the Carnival Procession starts. The procession involves approximately 1000 people, including local families who have made their own lanterns at our workshops, giant lanterns, stilt-walkers, dancers, drummers and more! Following the procession there is a fireworks display and more music and food. This is a donation-entry event. Come along and enjoy!

Mid-Summer Lights

The new Mid-Summer Lights event held from 16-20 December 2015 was a sell out success attracting 6000 people and wonderful feedback. Developed by the team that produces the annual Mid-Winter Carnival, it featured a walk-through installation of giant lanterns along with a sound track and live performances by aerial artists and stilt walkers. Our hope is to repeat this event once we have secured a more permanent home for our giant lantern collection.
